The Baiga tribe residing in the Kabirdham district of Chhattisgarh, bamboo art has been an integral part of their lives since ancient times, permeating their daily routines, social customs, religious practices, economic activities, musical instruments, and means of entertainment.

Bamboo is extensively utilized in house construction for walls, roofs, doors, and fencing. It is also employed in crafting various household items, hunting and fishing tools, and storage containers. The Baiga community, including both men and women, are traditionally skilled in the art of bamboo crafting, which serves as a significant source of their livelihood alongside agriculture and forest produce.

They create a diverse range of bamboo products, including supa (winnowing fan), dali (basket), jhauha (semi-circular basket), tukna-tukni (small baskets), khirnahin (fish trap), chhiti (small container), khumri (head covering for protection from sun and rain), kumni (storage container), choria (small basket), kuru (fishing tool), jhalar (hanging decoration), gobrahi (manure basket), gandra (large container), kakai (comb), and agisara (fire starter - though not bamboo).

Each of these items demonstrates the tribe's deep understanding of bamboo's properties and their skillful craftsmanship, passed down through generations. The creation and sale of these bamboo artifacts also contribute to the Baiga community's economic well-being.
