short description
It is the Kadar tribe that was one of the only genuinely aboriginal races of the West Ghats of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Indeed, the Kadar tribe incorporates into itself sustainable practices and a close nexus with nature as important constituents of the life. Fishing or catching fish is one of the important parts of their livelihood, and this small yet extremely effective basket reflects the skills of the tribe in crafting tools from local materials. One of the traditional tools they used for these purposes is the bamboo basket used for carrying fish. The basket is formed by an inverted cone with a circular hole on top. This shape enables efficient storage of fish without overcrowding them. The rim has two small handles on both sides which stomach the basket easier to carry in use with fish.

The placement of the handles is such that it balances the ease of carrying a catch, particularly while maneuvering over hilly or rough uneven grounds or dense forest areas . The split bamboo is woven by hand to create a robust yet flexible structure. Bamboo is perfect for this type construction, being light but strong. The Kadar people use such baskets to take fishes and also for transporting small farm products or gathering forest materials. This bamboo basket illustrates the practical wisdom and environmentally sustainable lifestyles of the Kadar people, using the abundant natural materials at hand. Environmental respect marked by their traditional, eco-friendly practices gets reflected therein.
