short description
Khonds, a large tribal community living mostly within the confines of Odisha, have, by and large, been recognized by others for strong cultural traditions, eco-friendly lifestyles, and indigenous crafts. The Siredi- a traditional form of comb made by bamboo- have been cited as one of the smallest items of personal use by the Khonds, and, in fact, is a really intriguing example of eco-friendly design and fine artistry. The Siredi is a miniature comb and is painstakingly handcrafted from the extremely fine bamboo strips. The strips are perfectly aligned with each other and are secured by cane bindings, which lead the whole framework to emerge as a compact yet long-lasting grooming tool. It is the tapering design for which the comb is famous--shrinking towards the end of its working field, that then broadens toward the handle, providing a firm grip with the most effective use of the comb. The small and lightweight of the comb also enables easy portability and hygiene.

The Siredi serves both men and women of the Khonds tribe, but it is not only a personal grooming item. The Siredi symbolizes the tribal attachment towards the surrounding nature. The fact that bamboo is local and biodegradable represents how Khonds respect and rely on organic materials.Apart from becoming a grooming accessory, Siredi has often found its realization in noting social and ceremonial contexts, where it stands for tidiness and self-discipline. This most simple thing is borne out of utilitarianism, craftsmanship, and cultural identity.
