short description
Cachari is one of the indigenous communities dwelling especially in the northeastern region of India, with Assam as one of the known places it occupies, and all these talk about a rich culture with textiles and craftworks to boast. The Endi shawl, a little off-white in color, distinctly marks their attire, a very important clothing item signifying the practicality along with artistry of the people. Shawls made out of Endi silk, which is a type of wild silk, handspun and valued for strength and natural feel, depict features of an Endi shawl. The off-white color, purity, and simplicity to the Cachari people represent nature. The natural dyeing of Endi silk adds to this inherent coloring of the shawl, giving it soft, earthy tones that bond the bearer nearer to the earth and with the different natural fibers from which this was constructed.

It is not a very wide shawl, but it is sufficiently long to be worn over the shoulders or wrapped around the body. This has made it one of the best clothing items for normal days, while it also gets the chance to go along with ceremonies, cultural programs, and festivals. One unique identifying feature of the shawl is the maroon stitching along the ends with maroon threads. The simple, neutral background makes the use of maroon threads quite prominent and thus it adds a touch of elegance and intricacy to the shawl which makes it striking while maintaining the subtle elegance synonymous with Cachari textile work. The end and mark of excellence in weaving and textile design have been exponents in the long heritage of the Cachari tribe, and the Endi shawl stands to prove this living tradition and craftsmanship at its best.
