description
Iron hoe, a traditional agricultural equipment used for the purposes of a Sauras community belonged to Persea Kennedy Malias Indigenously Hill Community from the State of Odisha in India. The implement consists of a rectangular iron blade, the sharp straight cutting edge of which is designed to put soil into the soil while digging and weeding as well as for loosening the earth via shifting cultivation and terraced farms characteristic of hilly regions
The opposite end of the cutting edge has a long tang and can be inserted into a hole at the end of the thick end of the wooden handle. The handle is long, tapering to the end, and the angle between the handle and the blade is acute so that it has to be used in an ergonomic manner with minimal physical strain. This angled design makes clearance of vegetation or turning of soil over uneven slopes very effective.
Mainly it is used by Saura people and it is a real representative of indigenous agriculture practices, self-sufficiency, and local materials know-how of the community. Even those are mostly crafted by the local blacksmiths shaping and forging as per the requirements of the subsistence farming of the tribe.
