description
Iron dao is an indigenous agricultural tool, perhaps more importantly, a traditional tool for the Khasi Tribe, one among many native peoples in the North-East part of India. A dao plays a very vital role in the life of the Khawhier; this tool is their companion in cutting, clearing, and harvesting in the region.

The iron dao really consists of two main components: the handle and blade. The wooden handle is usually long and heavy so as to hold it firmly, greatly required for prolonged use in the field. The blade is made of iron, tapering in design so that very sharp edges will give it cutting abilities for accurate and prolonged cuts. The curvature of the leading edge of the iron dao blade allows cutting and clearing of thick bush; hence, the curved shape allows maximum exertion of force onto effective strokes useful in clearing and harvesting all sorts of crops in the agricultural fields. The draping symbolizes the tool's everyday uses in agriculture, clearing pathways, or in the jungles, spiritually connecting the Khasi tribe to nature. Iron dao denotes the craftsman of the Khasi; it also speaks of their brilliance and foresight on what would be their agricultural needs.
