description
The Horn and Gunpowder Magazine has become a vital element of the tribal heritage of the Paite community in Manipur of India and in Myanmar. This curvy box, made of a combination of horn and wood, is used to store gunpowder for firearms. Tiger skin band or strap of this shows that it is made to serve its purpose as well as enhance its value
At the narrower end of the horn, it is covered by a decorated wooden cover, painted in shining and striking red and black colors, which serves to protect its contents and enhance the object. The wider end has a design that compares to the '+' sign, adding meaning and culture. The tiger skin band tied around the object reflects the Paite tribe's innate linking with nature, most particularly with the beloved tiger that is often referred to as a sign of strength and bravery in their folklore.
The Paite tribe has recorded a rich history of the use of such tools intended for hunting and warfare, and the horn and gunpowder magazine stands out as very essential in their traditional way of life. It also stands beyond craftsmanship on resourcefulness and connection to nature and their ancestors.
