short description
The Rabha are an indigenous tribe mostly found in Assam, Meghalaya, and West Bengal in India's northeastern part, recognized for their specialization in bamboo work and a few other natural materials; primarily weaving. The pitcha, the most characteristic of all Rabha products and at the same time the most utilitarian, is also a functional object given high status in any culture. It remains an object to testify as an example for understanding how Rabha make functional art using the resources available at hand.

The unique yet very functional pitcher shape with a narrow bottom neck is ideal for carrying and pouring. This shape makes the basket perfectly suitable for the smaller capacity for holding liquid or grains or something important. The circular and round base gives it stability so that it stands when placed down on the ground.
A small handle is joined to the neck of the basket to aid in holding and transportation. This short handle, made from bamboo, shows how the artists from the Rabha Tribe deliberately combine functionality and aesthetics. The entire basket-making process relays an insight into the comprehensive knowledge of weaving of the tribe passed down through generations. The pitcher basket remains pivotal in the everyday lives of the Rabha, used in numerous practical and ceremonial activities. It represents the deep connection of the tribe with nature and the sustainable manner of making functional objects with the materials found around them.
