The Chadar Badar puppets are miniature wooden figures beautifully carved by local craftsmen of Santhal. The limbs are attached to sticks that are connected to a leaver mechanism, manipulated skillfully with the main cord by a puppeteer

Santhal Puppetry
description
These are shown on a portable stage- six feet high-two major structures make up the portable setting: Dhera- the base of setting, charkha- revolving stage making an act lively. Puppetry is not mere entertainment. It is also a means of art to convey a story, a social message, and folk-tale from one generation to another. The art is beautifully documented in the book "Chadar Badar Puppetry, Santhal Puppetry", by Karan Singh Rana published by Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata.
