The Khasi, who settle in the present-day state of Meghalaya in India, is one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Northeast, representing the Astoasiatic languages. The matrilinial society of the Khasis is unique-stuck in contrast with most of the other Indian communities, where lineage and inheritance are traced through the father's side. The Khasis used to live historically in independent chiefdoms called Himas, each ruled by a Syiem (chief) and each was having its own well-defined structure of government.

The Khasis have faith in an amalgamation of animism, ancestor-worship and nature-worship. They worship sacred groves called Law Kyntang and carry out performances to appease their ancestors and deities. A unique expression at the Shad Suk Mynsiem festival, theatre, dance, folk, dress and customs finds a place in the culture of the Khasis.
Khasi folklore is dotted with myths, which includes stories like the Seven Huts (Ki Hynniew Trep), which tell of the mythical origin of their people. An oral tradition of mythology and storytelling that has preserved from their ancestors until the present day the history and cultural knowledge of the Khasis. Gurdon's work remains a vital reference for scholars and enthusiasts who intend to explore the ethnology and anthropology of Northeast India.
