Lepcha Tribe: Among the indigenous people in Sikkim, they are the only traditional dress by Lepchas. One of the dresses is a stitched white cotton shorts with a very broad waistband. This is a typical Lepcha dress, very simple and functional like their other lifestyles.
These whites shorts are quite comfortable, and mostly made for practical uses in hilly and forested terrain in Sikkim, where inhabitants reside. A broad waistband keeps it from slipping down while their activities, including farming, hunting, and trekking, allow them freedom of movement without restriction.
The style with which they dress and cover themselves, separates Lepchas from all the other Himalayan tribes. With shorts like these, a man wears a robe-like dress, a thokro-dum. Thokro dum consists of a shirt, waist cloth, and sometimes a traditional cap. These shorts form an essential part of the day-to-day attires while on work and mobility.
Most Lepchas are modernized in their dress, as such they reflect in daily wear for some festivals, cultural ceremonies, and community gatherings. Simple though the whites shorts have gone beyond the idea of utility, but represent deep reflection to the traditions and lifestyle of Lepcha upbringing.
