short description
The Mikir or Karbi is an indigenous group residing mostly in the hilly parts of Assam which is distinguished for its rich cultural heritage along with their original traditional dresses. One of their traditional attires is that wrapper of red and white cotton, which contributes significantly in both everyday and ceremonial dressing. This is handmade cotton fabric. It has red and white strips, making it decoratively appealing but not imposing. Red and white denote tribal symbolic meanings: red stands for vigor, strength, and festivity; white denotes peace, simple living, and purity. Together they create a beautiful contrast, symbolizing the dualities of life as well as nature, which are important in Mikirs' beliefs.

Generally, rectangular and revolved around the body as either lower body wear or upper body drape, depending on occasions and genders, the wrapper is. Lightweight and made of breathable cotton makes it an ideal garment for the high humid and warm atmosphere of the hill region of Assam. Handloom weaving continues to occupy considerable attention in Mikir society, and articles such as this red and white wrapper are woven in the traditional looms using the centuries-old production methods. Worn during festivals, community gatherings, or even at daily occasions, this wrapper is much beyond the functional piece of clothing; its a visual indicator of culture and its art forms.
