An ornamentation of its clothing and culture amidst the tribes in this northeastern state of Assam is that of the Mikir or Krabi tribe. It is most elegant among these personal garments of men of that tribe- a cotton coat-each a well-crafted traditional costume with ancestral ties. The black rough cotton coat is an open sleeveless upper wear used with a dress when a little warmth and fashion is to be added. The rough cotton fabric is indeed practical to endure and is comfortable against the weather conditions of the place. The quality deep black in the coat bespeaks strength and considers the spirit of the Mikir people.
It is very artistically adorned and embroidered, lending it elegance, style, and a view of artistry. The lower part of the coat has embroidered motifs, there are a few on the back, and others on just below the neck opening towards the front part of the coat. This embroidery is made in bright contrasting colors such as brilliant red, orange, and light-yellow threads that stand out wildly from the black. Of course, these designs have some cultural meanings significant in the art forms of the tribe: connecting with nature and spirituality. From the bottom of the coat hang long cotton fringes, adding to the beauty of the coat, as well as a tinge of tradition. The cotton coat is worn at cultural ceremonies, festivities, and during day-to-day chores, and is an important article of clothing for the Mikir tribe, in honoring their legacy and identity.
