short description
The potter's spatula is two wooden spoons belonging to the Chakhesang Naga of Nagaland, India. Both the spatulas are flat to highlight the function and design simplicity meant for pottery making. These hardwood Spoons are probably two of the most important tools used in shaping and molding clay pots manually; these skills have been handed down over countless generations. These flat-type spatulas are, therefore, convenient and useful for smoothing and shaping the surface of clay to get well-textured and polished pots. Pottery is one of the important aspects of the Chakhesang community used in daily life and for ritual and ceremonial purposes when clay pots are used for the storage of food and water.

Traditionally, the wooden spatulas are used to smoothen the coiling wound layers of the shell during pottery. The coil is smoothed, more of the defects are taken out, and all in all, it increases the durability and even shape of the pot made. These tools are indicators of the Chakhesang Naga's rootedness in the environment and in the resources that have been incorporated into an object of use but durability. The simple design puts into sharp contrast the elaborate craft that goes into making the pottery itself; it shows the artistry of the tribe applied to life in general.
