short description
The Rabha tribe, natives of Assam, Meghalaya, and West Bengal, carries a rich history of being intimately connected with nature and equipped with diverse traditional arts and crafts. The wooden model is exceptional in that it is made entirely of wood and consists of two principal sections, namely, the body and the beam.
The body of the model is somewhat concave so as to allow easy working, while the handle is a natural extension of the body to give maximum strength and durability. The beam is fitted correctly at the free end for balance and support. This model is a wonderful account of Rabha skill in woodcraft, which was handed down over generations.
This wooden model finds use in various work activities, most importantly for agriculture, transportation, and other household activities. Having existed as wood artisans since time immemorial, the Rabhas, in their forested homeland, are dependent on woods for their basic needs and means of sustenance.
Besides its utilitarian worth, this wooden model also carries with it cultural and symbolic significance for the Rabha tribe. It may be used in traditional rituals, related folklore, or as a token of their civilization. They still maintain their craft and skills to date, ensuring the immobility of their culture into the next generations.
