short description
The Cane Basket has become another multifunctional article created by the Idu Mishmi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, India. This basket, made up of durable cane strips, has been their indispensable travel companion during long journeys, during which they carry very important items. The tribe is generally well versed in basketry techniques and has honed skills to develop strong and lightweight baskets capable of enduring the rigors of travel. The weaving starts with the identification and preparation of soft but tough canes, and these are very carefully entwined into a strong and portable structure. Obviously, carrying form and size depends primarily on the function: the arrangement from carrying food and essentials to hunting or collecting tools varies widely in form and size. The tight weave also ensures that stores remain ventilated to avoid spoiling things.

Idu Mishmi Tribe’s Basket
description
More than just its practical uses, the Cane Basket holds considerable relevance in the culture of the Idu Mishmi. The techniques and patterns used in weaving certainly speak of the identity and tradition of the tribe as well as its ties with nature. The art of making these baskets would be preserved through successive generations of artisans so that the ancient profession continues to flourish. As a consequence of the growing affection for handcrafted and sustainable products, the Idu Mishmi Cane Basket is emerging as more than a mere utility object; it is carving a niche as a symbol denoting indigenous craftsmanship and eco-friendly living.
