description
Satta is a ceremonial umbrella some Khond believed they carry during their marriage. Khonds form one of the important tribal communities of Orissa, having a colorful cultural heritage besides a distinctive genetic makeup. They really possess some peculiar customs, especially concerning the rites of passage like marriage. Sed Satta symbolizes not merely the marriage ceremony, but also tribal craftsmanship.
The marriage umbrella has a wooden frame covered with black cotton cloth, a color that often symbolizes dignity and solemnity in the tribal ethos. It possesses a uniquely curved wooden handle for easy grasping. During the wedding ceremony, this Sedi Satta is held over the bridegroom's head as a sign of honor, protection, and ceremonial significance while proceeding with the wedding rituals. The Sedi Satta has an elaborate design embellished with multicolored beads indicative of the tribe's vivid designs and handcrafting styles. From the rim of the umbrella are suspended sixteen 25-paise coins affixed with colored thread; these coins serve the dual purpose of decoration and as symbols wishing prosperity for the new couple.
