short description
Puju is an artistic leaf-shaped hairpin used by the Kondh women of Odisha, who are one of the largest tribal communities in this state, exhibiting vast cultural heritage and customs. The Kondhs have preserved their customs through distinct garments of clothing and ornamentation. The Puju is an ornament that has special significance among them. Functionally, it serves as an ornament most visibly, though in important respects it represents the identity and craftsmanship of the people. The Puju, cast in white metal, features intricate filigree work on its backside, displaying a delicate metal craftsmanship very much in practice by tribal artisans. A single piece of red stone is set as the centerpiece, symbolizing beauty and life.

The ventral side constitutes two pointed pins that help secure the piece into the wearer's hair, thus providing both stability and style. Hanging from the sides of the pin, metal chains sway along, creating a delicate visual rhythm. Such decoratives are often worn on formal occasions such as festivals, marriage ceremonies, and traditional dances, enhancing the charm of traditional Kondh attire. Thus, Puju is testimony to the continued artistic traditions of the Kondh tribe expressing the marriage between function and beauty. Today it still holds importance as a cultural identity, especially among women who love wearing these age-old symbols.
