short description
Gadaba tribe is located in Odissa's Koraput and the adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh. Gadabas are well known for their culture that is much associated with nature and about the various means of their traditional livelihood, among which is the Murdi-a pitcher-shaped basket that serves as the fishing basket. The very creation is a remarkable example showing the craftsmanship and environmental application knowledge of the Gadaba people. The basket is Murdi, meant for catchment of fishes from the rivers and streams. Parallel in shape with a rectangular base, it is intentionally made so as to stabilize when it is placed in water. The whole body of the basket is made from bamboo and woven very loosely to allow the water to pass through much trapping fishes inside. Such a loose weaving creates natural perforations as water-and fish flow through the weave, and it helps very much in not making it too heavy or submersible in water.

To make sure the strength and durability, the rim of the Murdi was made up of reinforced bamboo straps and around the neck of the basket a twisted bark rope, which keeps the opening secured, is wound. The flat design of the basket and the projections on both lateral sides allow it to be placed efficiently in water for easy handling while in use. Murdi showcases the genius of Gadaba tribe in making the most from the available natural resources for sustainable fishing. The basket design makes it an extremely efficient weapon for trapping fishes without overtly appearing to clash with the eco-age of tribesmen.
