Ghandar operated as a tool for customary cotton processing the Rabha tribe exemplifying the cleverness and self-sufficiency of the indigenous community. The Rabhas primarily settled in Assam, more specific areas are Goalpara, Kamrup, and Baksa, where they present stages in vibrant culture, handloom weaving, and sustainable life. The Kerka holds a very significant position in cotton ginning separating cotton fibers from seeds before any spinning begins. The apparatus consists of two vertical wooden stakes fixed onto a horizontal rectangular base. Each stand has rectangular cut outs through which two cylindrical wooden rods and two flat rectangular wooden slats are inserted transversely.
One of the cylindrical rods has an end that curves, while the other has a handle for rotating the rod to allow manual operation on the said tool. These rods work in tandem to trap and pull in the cotton so that fibers can be made to separate easily. A flat piece of wood is vertically inserted into the base, which could provide stabilization or support when in action. Kerka not only stands for the Rabha community's dependence on handmade tools but also their expertise of natural materials and mechanical principles.
