short description
The grand old brass figure of an elephant is very much a Dokra or Lost wax cast tradition and the art of metal casting that very much dates back at least 4,000 years. This particular object is closely linked to the Khonds or Kondhs of Odisha, a community rich in culture and traditions of arts. The effigy portrays a human figure seated on the elephant, either the royal or ceremonial rider-a motif seen often in tribal arts. The body of the elephant, molded in a stylized manner, with a rhomboidal design, imparts a distinctly geometric and textured aesthetic onto the sculpture. In this fashion are mounted small, round bowl-like stirrups on either side of the elephant, adding some realism as well as decorative features to it. These distinguishing traits admire the artisans' skill, giving evidence of their extensive knowledge of symbolism.

Such representations within the Khond Community are often the marriage gifts for the bride's trousseau. An elephant symbolizes power, intelligence, and steadiness, believed to confer blessings of strength, longevity, and harmony on the couple in their married life. The symbolism of the human figure seated on its back representing leadership and protection is greatly honored in tribal culture. Each piece of Dokra sculpture is unique due to the fact that it is entirely handmade and utilizes a single-use mold. Thus, this Atti is more than a decoration; it is a memory of culture and a symbol of identity to the Khonds.
