short description
This basket is a beautiful example of rustic domestic handiwork from the Cachari Tribe of Assam, India. It is a square configuration basket with separated splits of split bamboo, a material used mainly with tribal artisans because of its strength, flexibility, and availability in the region. What is unique to this basket is the fact that it has two layers: an internal surface and an external one with different weaving-types. The double layer design is an attractive enhancement of the basket in addition to making it durable and well insulated for many householduses. It makes the appropriate basket for storage of grain, vegetables, or other household items.

The bottom has reinforced long, thick bamboo strips inside and covered with thin cane strips, ensuring a strong and sustained foundation. Base is similarly made by using strong bamboo strips, giving them more strength and durability as well as overall structural integrity. The design reflects not only the bamboo skill of the Cachari but also their balanced and practical approach to daily life. Traditionally these are made by the hands of artisans and passed down through generations as a representation of cultural identity as well as use. That is, the bamboo basket is now housed in ethno-collections such as the Indian Museum, and it provides an explanation for the life of one of the tribes in Assam and his seeking to master his art.
