short description
This finishes a beautifully-made bamboo container coming from Chakhesang Naga, which happens to be one of the major indigenous tribes of Nagaland, India. They are great at craft making out of bamboo and cane. The Chakhesangs are known for preparing several household items with locally available natural materials and are known for the durability and functions of these items. This pot is of cylindrical nature, having the upper and lower ends in perfect circular form. The surface of this bamboo object is likely to have been smoothed and treated, according to traditional methods, to prepare it for enhanced durability and moisture resistance. The chief characteristic of this pot is a handle that is affixed on the opening for decorative ends; visually attractive and more comfortable for handling

These jars or pots have been traditionally used for storing dry grains, fermented food items, and to carry water. It is light but strong; it thus is of suitability for such everyday containers. Even though utilitarian, the decorative elements added to these pots show how aesthetic Sachha sensibilities are deeply ingrained in the Chakhesang, often as a carryover into the blending of beauty and utility in their material culture. It portrays the sustainable lifestyle of the community as it is made from renewable materials and reflects the age-old artisanal legacies. Objects like this are now far superior examples of utility; they carry among their other symbolic meanings important cultural ones, being increasingly related to knowledge about the land and environment in a much deeper sense.
