short description
This basket is a traditional handcrafted item that bears the traces of craftsmanship as well as the resourcefulness of the Khasi tribe, an indigenous community inhabiting the Meghalaya region of northeastern India. This uniquely designed conical basket is a perfect interpretation of available bamboo splits and an easy material to find in the lush forests of Meghalaya. The square base provides stability and functional design attributes to the conical shape of the basket, which is good for the transport of goods and the collection of food. Most notably, Conical Khasi Tribe Basket rims and edges are reinforced. A careful attachment of split bamboo strips to the rim and edges adds to the structural integrity of the basket. These reinforcements add strength to the basket and give it longevity with the quality to withstand daily wear and tear.

description

The bamboo of the basket is tightly woven to form the basket's body with a strong yet lightweight structure, making them excellent for carrying agricultural produce, firewood, and other goods. Such precision of weaving and utilization of natural materials shout out for an extensive understanding of the environment and the capability of the Khasi tribe to make functional items from those resources that they could lay hands on.
This basket is a valuable tool in the hands of the Khasi tribe and manifests not only the basketry skills but also their sustainable practices in utilizing natural resources. The work also, for several generations now, continues to be a vital and active participant in the daily life of the tribe and marks the cultural identity of the Kharo tribe.
