short description
Cane Belt is practical handcrafted accessories used by the Apatani tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. It is made through the basketry technique; this belt is particularly designed for carrying heavy loads vital in the Apatani people's day-to-day life. The belt is interwoven from the strong yet flexible strips of the cane so as to last long and be comfortable while carrying some goods.
The cane weaving process involves the selection and preparation of good quality cane fibres which are intricately woven together to form a lightweight yet strong structure. When wearing this belt onto the waist, it provides added support while the carrying basket or bundle rests onto it, evenly distributing weight all across the body, mainly Front or Back. Thus, these belts are quite useful in agricultural work, forest gathering, and household tasks-a necessary evil.
The Cane Belt, apart from being an article of utility, carries cultural meanings in the Apatani community. The making of these belts is an ancestral skill passed down generations that testify to the tribe's knowledge of natural materials and sustainable living. Each belt is crafted with skill intending its longevity in day-to-day work.
With the growing interest in indigenous handicrafts and products made from naturally available substances, Apatani Cane Belt is being acknowledged beyond tribal communities as a testimony to the inventiveness, craftsmanship, and cultural richness of the Apatani people.
