Cane Belt of Abor Tribe
description
It is an incredible cane belt created by the Abor tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, not only for practical use but also one that belongs to their aesthetic traditions. It is long, narrow, carefully woven from thin strips of cane through the plaiting technique so that it possesses strength and flexibility and at the same time visual texture.
The beauty of this belt lies in its decorative use of orchid skin, a material that is very dear to most tribes of Northeast India for its natural sheen and symbolic relation to forest. Orchid skin has been carefully put on the belt to enhance its visuality and at the same time reflect should-be the social and cultural identity of the user.Normally, this belt would be worn on ceremonial occasions or as an element of traditional dress of various members of the Abor community. Besides being a fastening device, it was a measure of craftsmanship and tribal heritage since every design could relate to some storytelling about culture passed down the generations.
