Khond Axe comes with a rectangular iron blade along one edge; enabling it to cut trees and clear forests. The handle is made from hard wood which offers a firm grip and is highly resistant to breaking. For centuries, these axes have been made using traditional iron-smelting techniques by Khond blacksmiths. This art is passed down in the community and keeps their knowledge and skills intact (Mohanty, 2012).
Axes aside from having their use have cultural and spiritual purposes. The axe is offered to withdraw Tari Penu, the Earth Goddess, in protection and welfare during their rituals and ceremonies. The axes were once held by Khonds in their battle against outsiders to defend their territory, thus becoming symbols of resistance and strength (Pattnaik, 2018).
Even today, the Khond people still use axes for their livelihood and they are willing to conserve their traditions. An axe to the Khonds is not just a mere tool; it has whispered into their ear tales of historical endurance and admired nature's beauty with respect.
