description
This gourd vessel made by modalities of the Gadaba tribe is a fine example of their use of raw materials and life with environment. The Gadabas, a tribal people settled in some parts of Odisha are well renowned for their cultural practices, attires, and field crafts.
The container consists of two distinct parts, a bulbous and roundish body and a narrow tubular neck. Its base is rounded and allows it rest indefinitely while being placed on natural ground or straw-based platforms. On the neck's outer surface are two small perforations into which thread is put for holding together a twisted coconut rope that acts as provision for hanging or carrying the container. A coconut rope not only increases the utility but also renders the tribe using locally biodegradable materials. Such gourd vessels are largely employed for the storage and carrying of water, fermented beverages, or grains. Being hollowed, cleaned, and dried, it serves as lightweight durable containers. This is now typically deep-seated in the tribal people's sustainable lifestyle and traditional knowledge systems.
